Many people often ask what it's like to be a missionary kid in Thailand. So I decided to do a blog post on what it's like to be a missionary kid in general. These are mostly just my own feelings about it.
Life as a missionary kid is different from being a regular kid. For one thing, we live in a country in Asia on the opposite side of the world. We don't get to live around many Americans. There are only a few that live near us. We miss getting the fellowship that we do at churches in America. It's harder to make friends. We have to learn a new language. You might say it's kind of hard being a missionary kid.
I have talked about this before, but being a missionary is full of goodbyes. Goodbye is something that we're used to. It happens all the time. Missionaries never really stay in one place for very long, so we're always making new friends and then leaving. I have so many family members and friends that I miss very much in America. Sometimes I wish I could be with them. But then I remember why we left. We're here for a reason.
I have wondered before why God brought us here. Why did God have to bring us to a SE Asian country on the other side of the world? Why Thailand? When we first came, I can honestly tell you that I didn't want to go. But I look back now and I don't regret it. I have made some friends that I wouldn't have met otherwise. I have learned a second language. And most importantly, I received Jesus Christ as my personal Savior right here in Chiang Mai, Thailand. God brought us here for a reason. He knew my heart and he knew what was going to happen before it did. I think now that if we hadn't come to Thailand I might not have gotten saved.
So if you ask me now, what do I think of being a missionary kid? I would answer you that it is hard. And no matter what anyone says, I can tell you that every missionary misses their home country and family at least a little bit. But it is worth it when souls are brought to Jesus. It is worth it when you see that new convert come to church on Sunday. It is worth it when your friend you invited to church shows up. It is worth it to see people brought to God. Seeing souls turn form Buddhism and follow the Lord is definitely worth it!
